Rembrandt’s portayal of this biblical scene is a poignant depiction of a husband unsure of his place within the family dynamic. Grappling with the emotional complexities of the divine scenario he has found himself in, Joseph peers through the window at the maternal bonding which is occurring within the humble yet homely environment. As his wife and child are bathed in holy light, Joseph strikes a forlorn figure who, although present, is portrayed as being outside of the family union.
