The Whitworth has created a new kind of space. The Collections Centre allows us to show, share and care for our important collections – opening them up for research in ways that weren't possible before. It is a place where we invite our visitors, from toddlers to academics, to select works for display. Our first invitation went out to everyone. Using Twitter, Facebook and Instagram visitors helped us pick some of the Whitworth's best-loved works to put on display in the Collections Centre until May 2015.
Top of the favourites was Jeffrey & Co.'s 1920s The Gondola wallpaper reprinted in 2006 by Cole and Son, followed by works by Utagawa Hiroshige, an acclaimed Japanese master of woodblock prints, Pablo Picasso and Edvard Munch. Brer Rabbit designed by William Morris was the textile that gained the most votes. All the other works on show came high on the list of People's Choice.
